Carbon Dioxide Emission Reduction
The science presented and updated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has confirmed not only that our planet is warming but that it is at least 90%
Likely that human activities are principally responsible for the warming observed since 1950.
The IPCC also found that greenhouse gas emissions ( the majority of which is CO2) have risen by 70% since 1970 and will rise by between 25% and 90% over the next
25 years if we continue with our business as usual model. If we continue along this path we risk dangerous levels of climate change making increasing parts of our planet
un-inhabitable and commercially unviable.
UK Reduction Strategy
Royal ascent for the Climate Change Act 2008 has now been granted ( November 2008). It commits the UK to legally binding green house gas emission reduction target of at least 80% by 2050 when compared to 1990. The interim target for 2020 has been reviewed by the Committee on Climate Change and they have recommended that this be increased to a 21% reduction when measured against 2005 levels. The Act introduces a carbon budgeting system under which the UK will set caps on emissions for five year periods at a time. The first three of these will run from 2008-12, 2013-17 and 2018-22.
How will these targets affect me?
Targets will begin to affect all parts of our society. The businesses that take early action and deliver low carbon products and services will succeed in protecting corporate
Value. Specific measures that will be increasingly required are:
- Key Performance Indicator reporting for CO2 and other GHG’s.
- Disclosure of corporate carbon emissions
- Adoption of the UK’s Carbon Reduction Commitment
- Purchase of carbon emission credits
- Adoption of product and service carbon emission labelling
- Adoption of onsite renewable power generation and heat recovery
